The experienced Borussia Dortmund center-back is disappointed for not being called up by coach Julian Nagelsmann.

In an interview with Bild, Mats Hummels did not hide his disappointment about being left out of the German national team squad for this summer's European Championship, a tournament that will take place on German soil.

"I can understand the idea that the group has grown since March. It is a disappointment for me, on a personal level, because, currently, I am one of the five best defenders in Germany. I have the self-confidence to say that," he stated.

When asked about the reasons behind coach Julian Nagelsmann's decision not to include him in the squad, the experienced 35-year-old center-back replied, "As I understand it, it was more about age-related issues, like physical condition. If I had been in the form I recently showed before the March [friendly matches], I might have been called up for the European Championship."

Hummels, who has been a key figure in Borussia Dortmund's defense, expressed his determination to continue performing at a high level. "I still feel very capable and fit to contribute significantly on the field. I believe my experience and skills can add value to any team," he added.

It is worth noting that on Saturday, June 1st, Mats Hummels and Borussia Dortmund will face Real Madrid at Wembley, London, in the Champions League final. This match is highly anticipated, as Dortmund aims to secure their first Champions League title since 1997. Hummels played a crucial role in their journey to the final, including scoring the winning goal in the second leg of the semi-finals against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes (0-1).

Despite the setback of not being selected for the national team, Hummels remains focused on the upcoming challenge. "My goal now is to give my all for Borussia Dortmund in the final and help the team achieve a historic victory. Winning the Champions League would be a tremendous achievement for the club and for me personally," he said.

The exclusion from the national team has sparked discussions among fans and analysts, with many questioning the decision given Hummels' consistent performances. However, Hummels has taken the situation in stride, emphasizing his commitment to his club and his readiness to prove his worth on the international stage if given the opportunity in the future.

As Borussia Dortmund prepares for the showdown with Real Madrid, Hummels' leadership and defensive prowess will be vital. The match promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams seeking to etch their names in the history books.
